Toronto Maple Leafs Trade for Brooks Laich

The Toronto Maple Leafs have traded for Brooks Laich from the Washington Capitals in exchange for Daniel Winnik and a fifth round pick in 2016, according to USA Today.

Laich, a 32 year-old centerman, has played in 60 games with the Capitals this season, scoring seven points (1 goal, 6 assists).  He is under contract through 2016-17 after which he becomes a UFA.  His cap hit is $4.5 million according to capfriendly.com.  He is a shot blocker who plays a two-way game.


Winnik, a 30 year-old pivot, has notched 14 points in 56 games for Toronto this season.  He is under contract through 2016-17 according to capfriendly.com, at a cap hit of $2.25 million.  Here are some highlights from a few years back for Winnik:



As part of the trade, prospect Connor Carrick and a 2016 second round draft pick were also sent to the Maple Leafs.  Carrick is a right-shooting defenseman who has seen three games with the Capitals this season.  In 47 games with the Hershey Bears for 2015-16, he has 26 points.
