Toronto Maple Leafs Trade Dion Phaneuf to Ottawa Senators

The Toronto Maple Leafs have traded defenseman Dion Phaneuf to the Ottawa Senators, according to a tweet by the Senators.  In addition to defenseman Phaneuf, the Senators will acquire forwards Matt Fratin, Casey Bailey and Ryan Rupert, as well as defense prospect Cody Donaghey, in the trade for forwards Colin Greening, Milian Michalek, Tobias Lindberg, defenseman Jared Cowen and Ottawa's second pick in the 2017 NHL draft, as reported on the Senators website.

GM Bryan Murray was on TSN 1200, where he stated that this trade was about acquiring a "hard working, competitive leader" and shoring up their back-end with Dion Phaneuf.  Murray also stated that Phaneuf is expected to be in the Senators' lineup tomorrow night.

There will be no salary retained by either team in the trade.  Phaneuf is currently under contract through the 2020-21 NHL season.  His contract is front-loaded in salary, carrying a cap hit of $7 million annualy.  In seven seasons with Toronto, Phaneuf had 196 points in 423 games.

Milan Michalek is a big piece in the players coming to Toronto.  The 31 year-old winger hailing from the Czech Republic has ten points in 32 games this season (6 goals, 4 assists).  The goal scorer is under contract through the 2016-17 season, after which he becomes an unrestricted free agent (UFA).

Tobias Lindberg is also a player of intrigue for Toronto.  The 20 year-old forward has 22 points (5 goals, 17 assists) in 34 games this season in Binghamton.  Lindberg is under contract through 2017-18, after which he would become a restricted free agent (RFA).

Colin Greening is a goal scoring forward who has been playing with Binghamton.  In 41 games at the AHL level this season, he has 13 points (7 goals, 6 assists).

Defenseman Jared Cowen has 4 assists in 37 games with the Senators this season.  The 25 year-old blueliner is under contract through 2016-17, after which he becomes a RFA.

28 year-old scoring forward Matt Fratin, heading to Ottawa, has 22 points (9 goals, 13 assists) in 47 games for the Toronto Marlies this season.

Forward Casey Bailey has played a bit with the Toronto Maple Leafs, but has been primarily with the Marlies.  This season in the AHL, the 24 year-old winger has notched 18 points (4 goals, 14 assists).

Ryan Rupert is a 21 year-old pivot who has put up 12 points (6 goals, 6 assists) in 29 games with the Toronto Marlies this season.

Cody Donaghey is a 19 year-old defenseman currently playing in the QMJHL for the Moncton Wildcats where he has 11 points (1 goal, 10 assists) in 15 games.
