Brand Prust and Mason Raymond on Waivers

Both Brandon Prust of the Vancouver Canucks and Mason Raymond of the Calgary Flames were placed on waivers as tweeted by Renaud Lavoie of TVA Sports.  Prust is at the tail end of a four year deal, signed when he was a member of the Montreal Canadiens, which carries a $2.5 million annual cap hit.  As GM Jim Benning was quoted via the team's Twitter account:

“This decision was based on the need to provide more opportunity for our younger players. We appreciate Brandon's contributions.”

Prust has seven points in 35 games for the Canucks this season after coming to Vancouver in a trade that sent Zack Kassian east to Montreal.  The Vancouver Canucks are near the salary cap heading into the February 29 trade deadline, which just may have been a consideration for this move.

Raymond was signed to a contract through 2016-17 which is carrying a $3.15 million cap hit.  The veteran winger has five points (4 goals, 1 assist) in 29 games with Calgary this season.  There was suggestion via Sportsnet that the roster spot to be opened could be filled by Micheal Ferland.
