Leafs to Keep 2015 Third Round Pick

As part of the compensation required when the Toronto Maple Leafs hired Mike Babcock, with permission while still technically under contract with the Detroit Red Wings, the Leafs need to provide the Wings a third round draft pick in one of the next three years. The Leafs will be retaining this year's selection according to SportsNet, which means they will forfeit a third rounder in either 2016 or 2017. The Leafs third round selection this year will be number 65 overall as things stand now, the fourth pick in the third round.

Although the Leafs do not yet have a general manager, and were denied permission to speak with New York Rangers' assistant GM Jeff Gorton as reported in the Toronto Star, it seems likely that team president Brendan Shanahan will be comfortable leading Toronto into the July 26 draft, rather than rushing the GM hiring process.
