Babcock to Coach Toronto

Although it was reported that Mike Babcock was in negotiations with the Buffalo Sabres, he eventually wound up going to the team with the most cachet, the Toronto Maple Leafs. Some thought he would stay with his longtime employer, the Detroit Red Wings. The San Jose Sharks were also noted to have filed the requisite paperwork in order to speak with Babcock however they were probably never in close contention for his services. Babcock becomes the 30th head coach in the Toronto Maple Leafs storied history. He will take over a team that many think has underachieved in recent years. After making the playoffs and almost beating the Boston Bruins in seven games two years ago, the maple leaves failed to qualify for the playoffs this past season after a head-coaching change in the middle of the campaign.
