NHL Snap Shots: Jovanovski Status, Hainsey Signing, Canucks On-Ice Friday, Flames' New Captain

As reported by the South Florida Sun-Sentinel, Florida Panthers defenseman Ed Jovanovski hopes to test his hip in some sort game action in about a week.  Jovanovski, who was named the Panthers' captain for last season, had surgery on his hip in April.  The 37 year-old blueliner is signed through the 2014-15 season according to capgeek.com.  In other recent NHL news:

  • The Carolina Hurricanes have signed free agent defenseman Ron Hainsey to a one-year contract worth $2 million, according to NHL.com.  Hainsey's signing was made more imperative after the Hurricanes received the news that Finnish defenseman Joni Pitkanen would miss the 2013-14 NHL season with a heel injury.  The 32 year-old Hainsey played for the Winnipeg Jets last season, notching 13 assists in 47 games.
  • The Vancouver Canucks will hold their first on-ice workouts of the season this Friday, when ninth overall draft pick Bo Horvat will have a chance to show his talent to John Tortorella and the rest of the Canucks' coaching staff.  Horvat was selected with the pick that Vancouver received from the New Jersey Devils in the draft-day trade for goaltender Cory Schneider.
  • The Calgary Flames have selected a new team captain, but are not ready to reveal that player's name just yet.  Although Flames' coach Bob Hartley is keeping the captain selection a surprise for now, all indications are that the choice is Mark Giordano.  The 29 year-old native of Toronto is signed with Calgary through the 2015-16 NHL season.
