NHL Snap Shots: Hjalmarsson, Pietrangelo, Kadri

The Chicago Blackhawks have agreed to a contract extension with defenseman Niklas Hjalmarsson, as reported on Yahoo Sports.  The big left-shooting defenseman from Sweden played in 46 regular season games for Chicago last campaign, notching 10 points.  He also picked up 5 assists in 23 playoff games en route to the Cup with the Blackhawks.  His current contract runs through the upcoming season at a $3.5 million cap hit, while his extension will take him through 2018-19 at a cap hit of $4.1 million, according to capgeek.com.  In restricted free agent news:
  • Alex Pietrangelo remains an unsigned restricted free agent for the St. Louis Blues.  The 23 year-old blue liner was strong for the Blues last season, garnering 24 points in 47 regular season games.  While Blues' GM Doug Armstrong made it clear recently that when Pietrangelo takes to the NHL ice again, he will be with the St. Louis Blues, a contract has not yet been agreed upon.  Jeremy Rutherford of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch recently noted several free agent defenseman available, if Pietrangelo is not signed by the start of the upcoming regular season, a list which includes Ryan Whitney and Ron Hainsey.
  • Nazem Kadri does not want to miss out on training camp with the Toronto Maple Leafs, per a statement he made on Wednesday, according to NHL.com.  Unless deals are agreed to within the next week, both Kadri and fellow restricted free agent Cody Franson would miss the start of training camp.
