NHL Snap Shots: Bernier, Kadri, Pulkkinen, Benn, Nugent-Hopkins

Jonathan Bernier and Nazem Kadri both suffered minor injuries and left the Toronto Maple Leafs' pre-season game on Thursday night against the Ottawa Senators, according to NHL.com.  Bernier, who was traded to the Maple Leafs by the Los Angeles Kings in June, actually suffered his injury in Toronto's morning skate, but was able to face 11 shots in the pre-season contest before leaving the ice.

Teemu Pulkkinen of the Detroit Red Wings has been suspended for four pre-season games, according to ESPN, for an illegal hit during a game against the Chicago Blackhawks on Tuesday.

The Dallas Stars have named Jamie Benn as their captain, according to CBS Sports.  The 24 year-old forward, drafted in 2007 by the Stars, has scored 193 points in 263 regular season games with Dallas.  Brenden Morrow had previously been the captain of the Dallas Stars.  General Manager Jim Nill, as quoted by CBS Sports, gave Benn high praise in his progression with the team:
"In a very short period of time, Jamie Benn has gone from being an exciting up-and-coming player in the NHL, to being a cornerstone of the franchise"
The Edmonton Oilers have re-signed young forward Ryan Nugent-Hopkins to a seven year extension according to the Edmonton Journal.  The 20 year old Nugent-Hopkins, the number one overall draft pick in the 2011 NHL entry draft, has suited up in 102 regular season games for the Oilers, notching 54 points.  According to the Journal, the contract kicks in after Nugent-Hopkins' entry level deal ends in 2014.  The total value of the contract is $42 million.
