2014 NHL Free Agents - Ryan Callahan

Ryan Callahan, who will carry a $4.275 million cap hit for the New York Rangers in 2013-14 according to capgeek.com, is set to become an unrestricted free agent in July, 2014 as things stand today.  While much talk of the New York Rangers' top free agent for 2014 has been centered around all-world goaltender Henrik Lundqvist, the Rangers' captain in Ryan Callahan will also certainly be a priority for general manager Glenn Sather to address prior to the start of free agency in the summer of 2014.

Callahan, who will turn 29 during the 2013-14 NHL season, has been a steady offensive performer for New York over the past few seasons.  The fan favorite was named captain in 2011, not in the least part due to the qualities mentioned by Sather in this quote from the Rangers' website:
"He leads by example with courage and a tireless work ethic on and off the ice, which is why he is so deserving of this honor."
The winger will start training camp for the 2013-14 season in a no-contact role, due to recovery from shoulder surgery in mid-May to repair a torn labrum.  Expect him to be back and fully healthy early in the 2013-14 season, putting pucks in net.

Outlook
The New York Rangers did not name Callahan the team captain because he was the most likable player on the squad, although he could be.  They named him captain because of the leadership and value he brings.  He will be playing under a new head coach in Alain Vigneualt, but there should be no expectation of anything less than a stellar relationship between the two.  Callahan will be re-signed by the Rangers, and it will be for north of $6 million in annual average value.
