2014 NHL Free Agents - Thomas Vanek

Thomas Vanek is currently set to become an unrestricted free agent in July of 2014.  His existing contract is valued at $50 million over seven seasons, expiring with the 2013-14 campaign.  The Buffalo Sabres' winger, drafted in the first round of the 2003 NHL entry draft, has scored more than 25 goals in every full NHL season since his first appearance (he notched 20 goals in the lockout shortened season of 2012-13).

There have yet to be talks between General Manager Darcy Regier and Thomas Vanek on any contract extensions, but that is not unusual at this point, prior to the start of the 2013-14 season camps opening.  The Sabres' owner has previously expressed his interest in signing Vanek, as well as soon to be UFA Ryan Miller, to a long-term deal, with the understanding that the players have a large say in the matter.

Outlook

As the team is currently constituted, Buffalo will have room under the salary cap to keep both Miller and Thomas Vanek.   With owner Terry Pegula expressing interest in re-signing Vanek, if the two parties can agree on contract terms, and if Vanek expresses his interest in remaining with the Sabres, then he should remain in Buffalo for the foreseeable future.
