2014 NHL Free Agents - Patrick Marleau

UPDATE:  Patrick Marleau was signed to a three-year contract extension, announced on January 24, 2014 and commencing on July 1, 2014.
Patrick Marleau is currently set to become an unrestricted free agent in July of 2014.  The current San Jose Sharks' winger has been with the organization since 1997, when he was taken second overall in the NHL entry draft.

Marleau, at 33 years-old, has proven he can continue to put the puck in the net at a prolific rate.  In six of the past seven full (82 game) regular seasons, he has notched 30 or more goals.  His offense has continued into the post-season when the Sharks needed him, as proven by his 96 points in 140 career playoff games with San Jose.

He has continued to inch along with the Sharks in terms of contract.  After a two-year deal finished up in 2010, Marleau inked a four-year contract with San Jose, taking him through the 2013-14 season at a total value of $27.6 million and a $6.9 millon cap hit.

Outlook
Marleau is a Shark.  Always has been and always should be.  He may not have a marquee presence like Jarome Iginla, Pavel Datsyuk or other star forwards, but he is every bit as valuable to his team on the ice.  San Jose has some big-name players coming up fro free agency in 2014, including fellow Sharks' forward Joe Thornton.  As its roster is currently constituted, San Jose is forecast to have about $25 million in available cap space for 2014-15.    As Marleau gets older and the cap gets smaller, there is every reason to believe that his annual salary will also move a bit lower.  The Sharks will have the room, at least as far as the NHL is concerned regarding the salary cap, to sign both Joe Thornton and Patrick Marleau.  With the Sharks continuing to make the playoffs and Marleau a key part of their squad, expect him to be re-signed before free agency kicks off in the summer of 2014.
