2014 NHL Free Agents: Joe Thornton

UPDATE:  Joe Thornton was signed to a three-year contract extension by the San Jose Sharks, announced on January 24, 2014 and commencing on July 1, 2014.
Joe Thornton has been a key cog in the San Jose Sharks wheel, since joining their team via trade with the Boston Bruins in 2005.  He is currently 33rd on the all-time NHL assists list, and is recognized as one of the best when it comes to setting his teammates up to score.

Thornton has a no-movement-clause in his current contract so he would need to consent to any trades.  It is more likely that he re-signs with San Jose or tests the free agent market though.  The Sharks have done well with Thornton anchoring their offensive attack, and he has fit into their lineup well.  Although San Jose will need to address forwards Patrick Marleau and Joe Pavelski, they should still have the room under the cap to ink Thornton to a deal that keeps him in the black and teal for a while longer.
