2014 NHL Free Agents - Dion Phaneuf

UPDATE: As of December 31, 2013, Dion Phaneuf has been signed to a seven-year contract extension that kicks in for the 2014-15 NHL campaign, according to reports at USA Today.  Phaneuf's contract extension is for a reported $49 million total, with a $7 million annual cap hit.  USA Today reports that he is tied for fifth among defenseman in highest annual cap hits.

Dion Phaneuf will become an unrestricted free agent in the summer of 2014.  His current contract, according to capgeek, is valued at $39 million over 6 years.  Although his salary varies by year, as seen at capgeek, his annual cap hit is $6.5 million.  Phaneuf will be 29 years-old if and when he enters unrestricted free agency.

The big, left-shooting defenseman has been an All-Star three times (twice with the Calgary Flames and once with the Toronto Maple Leafs).  In 600 career regular season games, he has picked up 340 points, 106 of which are goals.

Phaneuf has proven to be a very valuable player for the Maple Leafs, earning the designation of team captain.  The Leafs will most likely want to re-sign him, if a reasonable contract price can be agreed upon.  As of this writing, they should have plenty of cap room to ink him to a long-term deal, if that's what both parties want.  As the Toronto captain, who has seen his team come within seconds of upsetting the eventual Eastern Conference Champion, it would be surprising if Phaneuf sought out offers for a marginal uptick in salary.  This would particularly be the case if Toronto excels in the 2013-14 NHL campaign, which they should, if how they finished 2012-13 is any indication.
