Dallas Eakins: New Head Coach of the Edmonton Oilers

As reported by cbssports.com, the Edmonton Oilers have signed Dallas Eakins to be their new head coach. Eakins last coached in the AHL for the Toronto Maple Leafs affiliate, the Toronto Marlies.  In the four seasons that Eakins has been at the helm of the Marlies, he has taken them from a .488 winning percentage to a .632 winning percentage for both of the past two seasons.

Eakins will bring a fitness-minded approach to the young Oiler team.  As he was quoted in the Edmonton Journal:
“We’re going to be committed to a high fitness level. We’re going to be committed to the details of tactical hockey. But, foremost, the No. 1 thing we’re going to be committed to is competition. This team is going to compete."
Possibly the most highly sought after head coach candidate this year, Eakins was signed by Oilers' GM Craig MacTavish before the New York Rangers, Vancouver Canucks or Dallas Stars could enlist his services.

It will now be Eakins' job to get the Edmonton Oilers back to the Stanley Cup Playoffs for the first time since the 2005-06 season.
