The Detroit Red Wings and Potential Trade Partners

Helene St. James reports at the Detroit Free Press that given the shortened NHL season, teams are put in somewhat of a peculiar position regarding trade prospects.  With the tightness in the standings, and not many teams clearly out of contention, trading a soon-to-be free agent could be a precarious situation, if the team has a better shot at making a playoff run with that player.

More notes from St. James' insightful article:

  • Some teams who could be sellers, based on their current position in the standings include:  Columbus, Edmonton, Calgary, Colorado, Florida and Washington
  • The Detroit Red Wings will be looking for a top-four defenseman (no surprise given the retirement of future Hall of Famer Nicklas Lidstrom).  There will be high contention for such a player however, and not many available.
