Stephen Weiss Will Not Be Traded

Center Stephen Weiss has been shut down for the remainder of the 2012-13 NHL season with the Florida Panthers due to surgery on his wrist.

The 29 year old Toronto native, who will turn 30 on this year's April 3 trade deadline, is at the end of a six year, $18.6 million deal with Florida according to capgeek.com. The question now becomes, not will Weiss be traded, but will Weiss sign with the Panthers or another NHL squad as an unrestricted free agent?

Florida is projected to have seven unrestricted free agents after this season, with seven additional restricted free agents, and $19.4 million in cap space per capgeek.com. So does that give them any wiggle room to sign Weiss?

Currently, Weiss is the only free agent making more than $2 million annually. With as many free agents as they have, and a reduction in next year's cap of approximately $6 million, it will be a matter of filling in their roster with NHL caliber players, not All-Star caliber players. Granted, they have three goalies on the roster, including veteran Jose Theodore, but he too makes under $2 million annually.

It would be a tight squeeze to get Weiss back on the Panthers roster. But, you never know. With a trade or two, they could make it happen.
