Nate Thompson Signs Extension with Tampa Bay Lightning

The Tampa Bay Lightning have agreed to a contract extension with Nate Thompson according to Pierre LeBrun of ESPN.com.  Tampa Bay does not have many unrestricted free agents that they need to lock up for next season, but locking up their physical centerman was obviously a priority for GM Steve Yzerman and Lightning management.

Thompson was at the end of a two-year contract with the Lightning, with a $900,000 annual cap hit according to capgeek.com.  He's been a member of the Tampa Bay squad since 2010 when he was claimed off waivers from the New York Islanders.

While Thompson wins nearly half of his faceoff contests, the Lightning must like the energy and aggressiveness he brings to the game.  His offensive production has been good, but not stellar.  As of his reported signing, he has scored six goals and assisted on four more through 30 games.

LeBrun reports that Thompson's extension is for four years at $1.6 million per year.
