2013 NHL Free Agents - Mark Streit

Mark Streit is a $4.1 million cap hit for the New York Islanders in 2012-13 according to capgeek.com.  He's at the end of five year deal worth just over $20 million.

The 35-year-old defenseman has split his NHL time between the Montreal Canadiens and the Islanders.
Since coming to New York, Streit has proven to be a strong offensive presence on the blueline.  In a full slate of games last season, Streit set his teammates up to score 40 times, while putting the puck in the net himself on seven other tallies.

The Swiss native has really made a name for himself as one of the best offensive defenseman in the league.  Although he may not be the ideal size for a d-man, he plays the puck well in the offensive zone.  His success may have come as a surprise to some, in light of his position in the ninth round of the 2004 NHL entry draft.

Outlook
The Islanders need some stability on their team.  Streit has proven himself to be an offensive force and nothing to sneeze at in the defensive zone.  New York should sign Streit for at least a few more years.  Can they?  Most definitely.  The Isles have the most room under the cap currently, having to trade for Tim Thomas just to remain above the salary floor.  Will they sign him?  That is the big question for Islander fans.

As far as a trade is concerned, unless the Islanders suddenly conclude that they are in rebuilding mode (which they won't, at least this season), and while they remain in the playoff hunt, expect Streit to wear orange and blue through the remainder of the 2012-13 campaign.
