NHL Trade Snapshots: Weiss

There has been talk on both sportsnet.ca and thehockeynews.com that the Florida Panthers could look to trade 29 year old center Stephen Weiss if the Panthers appear not to be in playoff contention. Weiss, who scored 60 points in helping the Panthers to the playoffs last season, is in the final year of a six year contract paying him $4.1 million annually according to capgeek.com. Florida would not want to risk losing Weiss to free agency with nothing in return, particularly if they do not have a shot at the Cup this season.

Brian Stubits writes on cbssports.com that he does not believe Ryan O'Reilly, or any other restricted free agent, will receive an offer sheet any time soon. Stubits notes that the last time a player was signed away as an RFA from his current team was in 2007 when the Edmonton Oilers signed Dustin Penner away from the Ducks.
