NHL Trade Deadline - 2013 Date

The 2013 NHL Trade Deadline will be April 3, according to Reuters and Yahoo! Sports.  The Stanley Cup Playoffs will begin at the end of the same month, on April 30.  Some key players who could be moved prior to the trade deadline are unrestricted free agents at the end of the 2013 season, according to capgeek.com.  Players currently on this list who could be moved, depending on their team's chances of making the 2013 playoffs are:

  • Alexander Semin - The 28 year-old talented winger currently with the Carolina Hurricanes could provide an offensive boost to a defensive minded squad.  One particular team that could fall into this category is the Los Angeles Kings.  Semin is currently being compensated at $7 million annually according to capgeek.com
  • Mike Smith - The 30 year-old Ontario native netminder had a breakout season with the Phoenix Coyotes in 2011-12, posting a 2.21 GAA.  Smith is in the second year of a two year contract with Phoenix, worth $2 million per year.  If Phoenix winds up out of the playoff hunt, watch to see if the Coyotes put Smith on the market, potentially for prospects.
  • Kimmo Timonen - The 37 year-old veteran defenseman is with the Philadelphia Flyers in the final year of a six year contract.  With all the early season injuries that the Flyers have experienced, it is certainly possible that the Flyers could miss the 2013 playoffs.  If they do, taking into account this stellar defenseman's age and contract status, he could be dealt to a contender who wants to shore up their defense.
